Frank was doing time within time. I never really toured with an R&B band, but Id played it all my life. Man, I still love to play. He would have subdivisions within a bar. Yeah, apparently so. It was never a competition where I thought it should be me. Youve played Take Me Home hundreds of times. Does Phil Collins seem a Christmas card kind of guy to you? And to be honest, my whole career has been about playing different kinds of music. And the best artists do it without you even realising it. He is just a great drummer. He put everything into it. I never went in under any pretense of thinking it was going to be anything other than what it was. Hed recently wrapped up stints with Frank Zappa and Weather Report that lasted about two years each, and Genesis previous touring drummer, Bill Bruford, bailed after just four months on the road. You were still able to pack stadiums. As a matter of fact, we had already been told what dates to hold for 2008. Thats where I met my wife. By then, I had heard a lot of the prog-rock stuff and was very interested to play with those guys. Bands always change, and poor Phil just happened to headline the band as it started turning away from it's roots, and he gets branded as the bands destructor. In the meantime, the few months before, they went with different management, the same people that managed Earth, Wind, and Fire. The five of us lined up for a picture. He might have some fives and sevens instead of triplets, things like that. Oh, boy. But he just enjoyed being around us since we were so lively and fun. He said they were going to be doing something totally different and they werent interested. most great drummers won't ever do that, because they live for their drums. Exactly as described! Yeah. Phil Collins had to hire Chester Thompson and Bill Bruford. Chester Thompson on His Years with Genesis, Frank Zappa, and Weather Report He spent 30 years in Genesis as a touring drummer, but he had a falling out with Phil Collins in 2010 and they haven't spoken since Id have to say, I dont think Jaco was too comfortable with that. He told me that I sounded like crap and all that. Who were some of your drumming heroes as a teenager? I dont know if I had an expectation one way or the other. After Invisible Touch, I remember their conversations where they agreed to take five years off. You didnt finish the tour, though. Thats because it was getting close to time to go back out with Phil. most great drummers won't ever do that, because they live for their drums. A couple of days later, he brought the whole band in. What I can't still understand is the almost in memorian picture of him in Live 73. I interviewed Chester years ago for Percussive Notes, and he's a great guy, we actually spent an entire day together. By the time they reached out to me, they allowed 10 days for rehearsal and it was a two-and-a-halfhour show. I was like, Yeah. We had this other guy jump in. But I did wind up coming back in 1999. He made Frank laugh and a big part of those days was humor. They didnt find out until pretty late in the game that Bill wasnt going to do the next tour. You are using an out of date browser. But not only did Thompson stick with Genesis all the way through their Turn It On Again reunion tour of 2007 Collins also brought him over to his solo career in 1981 and used him for nearly all of his tours between 1981 and 2010. It made me realize that it really was a band. But on that first tour Id be like, Come on, man. I dont think that far ahead. Yeah. I did one of his solo albums and we had been pretty good friends. After that, I went back to Baltimore to a community college for a couple of years. Frank had a blackboard onstage with all the note names on it. Why didnt it go well? Like I said, it was never a band in that sense. Wed just sit in a side room because all they really wanted was the three guys. Im just really enjoying life. Even though [guitarist] Daryl [Stuermer] and I werent technically in [Genesis], we toured as the band. Mike Portnoy, Lars Ulrich: I don`t know nothing about them. Most surely he didn't made s much money as Phil Tony and Mike, but he has a wealthy positiobn and artistic respect, something that Genesis lost. Her daughter was this quiet little kid, but shes turned into this monster artist named Judith Hill. I know people were caravanning from here to see it, but it was still a little too raw at that point. Not sure what's up there? And I grew up with that Motown stuff, so I think maybe I took it for granted. Y'know, it's funny, but when I see the name Chester Thompson . My audition consisted just of jamming. We were like 9,000 feet above sea level in Colorado. The only person I didnt see was probably Otis Redding. Apparently he was a close friend of the band because in 1969 Genesis moved to cottage owned by Richard Macphail's parents to concentrate on writing. At least 50% of the already mentioned are composers also, and yes there are few drummers who are lead singers, because they would need to hire another musician to replace them while singing. I was wide-eyed and paying attention and had no idea what was going on. I don't think he's bnasty, seems a nice chap, but he said too many stupid things and then contradicted himself depending in the way the market went, He said Prog is crap when Prog was unpopular and harrased by Punk, Discoor New Wave, but when his boring pop became part of the past he changed and said he always was a proghead. They felt that was pretty interesting, but it was the only way we got through it. I dont know when he slept. When I worked with him, the core of the group was Napoleon on saxophone and singing, Bruce Fowler on trombone, Tom Fowler on bass, [percussionist] Ruth Underwood, George ,and Frank. Thats what they did when they left their gigs with Miles [Davis] and Cannonball [Adderley] to start Weather Report. And he put down some intense, complicated stuff. Im always very aware of whats going on. He was brilliant. In recent years, hes taught at Belmont University in his adopted hometown of Nashville and toured with the Chester Thompson Trio. During this time, the drummer somehow also found time to tour with Santana and the Bee Gees and maintain a solo career. Part of that was no matter how well I prepared, he always made some pretty intense changes. He was a phenomenal player oh, my goodness. That is the reason he left the drums to Chester and Bruford. Chester has a great attitude. Shed been on the road for three years straight and she got it. I had gone back to Baltimore. If hedidn't have considerable good qualities the band would not have stayed together for sixteen years which is like an epic length.As for him selling out I think what everyone underestimates is that the taste of the public had changed by the 80s. Yes, it`s true, but none of them became the permanent lead singer in their bands like Collins. She scored one of Spike Lees movie. What are your goals over the next few years? Ralph Humphrey was very helpful that whole time because I had been getting into odd times, but not at the level Frank was doing it. I know they are planning a European portion. I am a huge Genesis fan, but am only in high school so I never experienced Genesis when they were popular. I saw everybody in those days. As it turned out, I wound up doing a little, brief drum-clinic tour down there in Australia. The guy's a pro, and he plays his ass off. In fact, we wound up doing a tour opening for them. And I have to say, as much as I always felt separate and apart from the whole thing, seeing everyone together was an amazing and surprising feeling. Id hang out with these guys and theyd play all sorts of crazy stuff Id never heard before. Id always wanted to teach myself. If you like it, get Tokyo Tapes, with live versions of various songs from this album, ITCOTCK and I Talk to the Wind by King Crimsonplus a semi acoustic version of Heat of the Moment and a lot of Hackett material. I wasnt enough of a diplomat to just say, Oh, everything is wonderful. The Genesis stuff was more musically challenging and interesting to me. I think that he became popular with housewives, and that was his "guilt". They limit the amount of times you can access their site. -Ballads in Prog Rock are underrated, because Prog Rock is not "romantic". It was fun. I think he got a little annoyed since I had done an interview and they asked which I enjoyed [Genesis or Collins solo] more. But Phil Collins still did great things with those two albums. Its one of those What Will You Be letters. Wed do eight-hour rehearsals. But when that whole tour was announced, Phil was very insistent that it was not going to be a big tour. First thing out of his mouth was, Would you come back to the band? It was perfect timing. We go way back. I guess they were never able to release it because Peter is pretty spontaneous and it drove the sound engineer crazy. They assumed we were starting a new band like they did. No, I'm not a big fan of Collins, and no, I don't have any of his solo albums. I worked with him during a really happy period in his life. In my mind, these guys were almost hippies compared to what I was used to. Its not something he did. He was a virtuoso, no question, but most of his stuff was straight 16ths. But after reading the (excellent) interview, I have to say I'm quite surprised at how Chester was treated by the guys through the years. One day, he got pretty frustrated with me and literally cussed me out in front of everybody. Oh, yeah. His disparaging remarks about prog was probably a case of being less than honest.Another point in his defense is that he was one of the later ones to "sell out".
